The Beijing-based China State Construction Engineering Corporation has been given the estimated AED4.4 billion ($1.2 billion) contract by local developer Wasl to construct the Dubai project The Island.
An important milestone for Dubai is the contract award. As per the regional projects tracker MEED Projects, this is the biggest construction deal in the emirate since local contractor Alec won the $1.36 billion contract from local developer Ithra to construct One Zabeel in 2017.
The announcement of the award coincides with growing hope for Dubai’s construction industry. The emirate gave its approval for the $4.9 billion Blue Line expansion to the Dubai Metro system on November 24.
Situated on a 10.5-hectare island is the Island project. The MGM, Bellagio, and Aria hotel brands will all be represented in the project’s planned properties. The market anticipates that The Island will host casinos if the United Arab Emirates establishes legislation legalizing gaming, as MGM manages casinos in other jurisdictions.
Off the coast of Umm Suqeim, close to Marsa al-Arab and the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, is where the project is situated. In addition to retail, dining, and entertainment options, 1,400 hotel rooms and apartments are anticipated.
The earthworks contractor in the area is the local APCC. The main structural consultants are Buro Kling Architectural Engineering Consultants, Germany. On the project, consultant HSS is also involved.
