Fleeing the scene of a traffic accident, which has resulted in injuries to people, is a grave offense that carries severe penalties, including monetary fines and imprisonment.
The Public Prosecution of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken the initiative to raise awareness about the Federal Traffic Law and its consequences for those who flee the scene of an accident.
In a recent social media post on October 8, the Public Prosecution emphasized that failing to stop at the scene of a traffic accident that has caused injuries to individuals is considered a criminal act. Offenders can face a fine of no less than Dh20,000 and imprisonment, or one of these two punishments.
These penalties are in accordance with Article 49, Paragraph 5 of Federal Law No. 21 of 1995 concerning Traffic and its subsequent amendments.
What should you do when you are involved in a car accident?
To report an accident in the UAE, dial 999 from any location within the country to reach the police. Provide them with detailed information about the incident, including your precise location, and patiently await their instructions. It is crucial to remember that no traffic incident in the UAE should go unreported.
In the unfortunate event that you or anyone involved in the accident sustains injuries, it is advisable to leave all vehicles in their current positions and await the arrival of an ambulance.
However, if the accident is minor and no injuries have occurred, you may move your vehicle to the shoulder lane to prevent traffic congestion. Nonetheless, it is essential to maintain a minimum distance of 15 meters from your car while waiting for the police to arrive.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a prompt and efficient response from the authorities while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all parties involved.
