In accordance with UAE’s new cybercrime law, forging federal or local government electronic documents comes with a jail sentence and a fine ranging from Dh150,000 to Dh750,000.
The UAE Public Prosecution updated their social media channels on Tuesday, February 15, with information about the new law – Article 14 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes.
According to the post:
- Whoever falsifies any of the electronic documents of the Federal or Local Government or any federal or local public authority or organization shall be sentenced to a fine of between Dh150,000 and Dh750,000.
- For falsification of documents of any entity not specified in paragraph (a), the punishment is detention and/or a fine of between Dh100,000 and Dh300,000. (1) above.
- Anyone who uses a falsified electronic document will be punished as per the offense of falsification.
Cybercrime campaign by the UAE Public Prosecution
UAE Public Prosecution has used its social media accounts to raise awareness of the new cybercrime law. Previously, the authority had posted about the serious penalties for ‘making fun’ of COVID-19 rules as well as spreading fake news and rumors.
