To promote environmental preservation, the UAE’s Public Prosecution has recently introduced a commendable initiative focused on responsible camping. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the laws in place to safeguard the environment and educate campers on how they can actively contribute to its protection. By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can ensure that their camping activities do not have any detrimental effects on the delicate ecosystem.
“It is extremely important to conserve the desert landscapes, which make for more than 80 percent of the total area of the country,” UAE Public Prosecution said in an awareness post on its social media channels.
7 rules to follow
The authorities have provided campers with a set of guidelines to promote sustainable camping practices. These rules are essential for preserving the environment and ensuring a positive camping experience:
- Choose designated camping areas for setting up your camp. These areas have been carefully selected by authorities to ensure suitability for camping.
- It is crucial to respect and abide by local laws and regulations. Familiarize yourself with the rules of the area you are camping in and ensure compliance.
- Take responsibility for your waste. Collect all waste at the campsite and carry it with you when you leave. Leave no trace of waste behind in the desert, as it can harm the fragile ecosystem.
- Opt for sustainable camping equipment. Consider using tents made from recyclable materials and efficient cooking utensils that minimize energy consumption. By making conscious choices, you contribute to a greener camping experience.
- Conserve water resources. Use water wisely by carrying refillable water bottles and finding ways to reduce water consumption during cooking and cleaning. If you are near a lake or river, be mindful of not polluting these natural water sources.
- Minimize waste generation. Avoid using disposable items as much as possible. By reducing the use of single-use products, you contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable camping environment.
- Preserve the desert’s biodiversity. Ensure that you do not disturb the natural habitat of the desert ecosystem. Drive only on designated paths without any foliage to prevent damage, and if you decide to light a fire, choose areas devoid of greenery or insects.

Penalties for violators
Federal Law No. 24 of 1999, which pertains to environmental protection and development, mandates that individuals refrain from causing any harm to the environment. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the individual being held responsible for the costs associated with the treatment or removal of said damages.
The issue of desert animals ingesting plastic and suffering fatal consequences has been a persistent concern in the UAE. This concern was even brought to the forefront during the recently concluded COP 28 summit. A comprehensive study conducted by Dubai’s Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in 2021 revealed a distressing fact – approximately 300 camels examined by the laboratory since 2008 had perished due to the consumption of polybezoars, which are masses of non-digestible plastic material.
