The UAE is offering a special 10-year residency visa – the Blue Visa – to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to environmental conservation and sustainability. First launched in May 2024, this long-term visa aims to attract global experts in climate action and sustainable development to support the nation’s environmental, economic, and social progress.
Applications are now open through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Applicants can apply via the official online portal at smartservices.icp.gov.ae.
What is the Blue Visa?
The Blue Visa is a prestigious 10-year residency program established by the UAE to honour and encourage professionals, researchers, and advocates who have significantly contributed to environmental protection and sustainability. It is available to individuals with exceptional achievements both within the UAE and internationally.
Eligible applicants include leaders in environmental initiatives, members of global and regional organisations, recipients of internationally recognised awards in sustainability, as well as prominent researchers and activists in environmental sciences.
Who Can Apply?
The Blue Residency is designed for outstanding individuals in the fields of sustainability, climate change, energy, and environmental science. According to the ICP, eligible candidates include:
✔ Scientists, researchers, and experts working on environmental issues
✔ Entrepreneurs, investors, and inventors contributing to sustainable development
✔ Distinguished members of global environmental organisations
✔ Members of national and regional environmental bodies
✔ Financial supporters of eco-friendly initiatives
✔ Award winners of global, regional, or national environmental sustainability prizes
✔ Holders of advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) in environmental sciences, energy, or climate studies
✔ Leading researchers specialising in environment-related fields
What Are the Requirements?
Requirements differ based on the applicant’s profile and credentials, but all applicants must prove their contribution to sustainability, climate change mitigation, or environmental protection. Core requirements include:
✔ Proof of work and achievements in environmental sectors
✔ A valid passport with at least six months remaining
✔ A recent passport photo with a white background
✔ Relevant academic or professional documents supporting expertise
How to Apply
Applications for the Blue Visa are submitted through the ICP’s online platform: https://smartservices.icp.gov.ae/. Here’s how it works:
Step 1 – Apply for Nomination
- Submit a nomination request or get nominated by an authorised entity in the UAE
- This initial approval is required before applying for the visa.
- Nomination processing fee: AED 350.
Step 2 – Complete Your Visa Application
- Once approved, proceed with the visa application form.
- Update your visa status if you are already a resident.
- Enter personal details such as name, nationality, contact information, and passport data.
- Upload supporting documents and pay the visa fee online.
Alternatively, you can visit ICP’s Customer Happiness Centres or authorised typing centres to apply.
For Applicants Outside the UAE
If you are outside the UAE and have received a nomination, you can apply for a six-month multiple-entry visa to complete the Blue Visa procedures.
- Fee: AED 1,250.
