As a passenger, you have the right to skip the toll gate and choose a different route if you have ever paid additional fees when the cab crossed the Salik gate.
You must accomplish this by telling the driver up front that you do not want to pass through a Salik gate. Using information stickers put on the windows on the backseat, passengers of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) taxis can easily access this information.
Salik charge is added to the trip fare
If a cab passes from under a Salik toll gate, RTA states that customers must add Dh4 to the entire fee. The final fare includes the charge. You can request that the taxi driver avoid travelling a route that has a Salik toll gate if you do not want to pay this fee. In fact, in accordance with the rights of taxi passengers outlined by the RTA, a passenger has the right to specify the most practicable route to be taken to reach his or her destination.
From 2013, if the cab travels past a gate, the Salik tolls will be added to the fare.

Together with the additional Salik cost that the passenger is charged, the cab enters Sharjah with an additional Dh20 fee.

Starting fare for taxis in the UAE

The beginning fare for a standard cab that has been flagged down on the street is Dh5 between 6 am and 10 pm. Starting fare from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. is Dh5.50.
