Are you looking to earn some extra cash on the side but unsure of where to begin? Depending on your personal interests and professional skills, there are various ways you can supplement your income in the UAE.

It is crucial to keep in mind that whenever you decide to embark on a side business or job, there are rules and regulations that you must be aware of and adhere to. For instance, freelancing can be a convenient way to utilize your skills and make money, but it is essential to ensure that you possess a freelance permit to legally work in the UAE. Similarly, other earning options also come with their own specific set of regulations that you need to familiarize yourself with.

By understanding and following these guidelines, you can confidently explore the opportunities available to earn extra income in the UAE.

Here are seven simple and legitimate methods to generate additional income on the side in the UAE:

          1. Rent out your apartment when you’re on a holiday

Holiday homes can provide a convenient means of generating income while you are on vacation. In Dubai, both homeowners and tenants have the opportunity to list their apartments on vacation rental websites by registering their units as ‘holiday homes’. This enables you to showcase your residential property on short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb.

Similarly, Ras Al Khaimah’s Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) also permits individuals to offer their homes as holiday accommodations.

However, it is crucial to ensure compliance with the necessary regulations. In Dubai, obtaining the required permit from Dubai Economy and Tourism (DET) and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your landlord is essential. In Ras Al Khaimah, a permit from RAKTDA is mandatory.

If you are curious about the potential earnings, utilizing scanning apps like Airbnb can provide valuable insights.

By adhering to the appropriate procedures and leveraging the power of vacation rental platforms, you can transform your property into a lucrative holiday home, generating income even while you are away.

          2. Sublet your apartment

You have the option to sublet your apartment in Dubai, but it is crucial to be well-informed about the regulations outlined in the Dubai Tenancy Law (Law No. 33 of 2008 Amending Law No. 26 of 2007 Regulating the Relationship between Landlords and Tenants in the Emirate of Dubai).

Under Article 18 of the law, the landlord is legally obliged to grant the tenant the necessary approvals for any housing-related procedures, including subletting. Additionally, Article 21 states that the official documented lease contract must include a commitment not to make any alterations or renovations to the property without the lessor’s approval.

Experts interviewed by Gulf News have confirmed that subletting your apartment in Dubai is permissible, provided you adhere to these regulations. By following these rules, you can confidently sublet your apartment in Dubai.

          3. Sell your preloved items at flea markets

Flea markets are organized by event planners at popular locations in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other emirates. These markets provide an excellent opportunity to sell any preloved items that you no longer use at home. You can find a wide range of items available for sale, including household items, home appliances, small furniture, textiles, ceramics, electrical equipment, books, DVDs, clothes, and even antiques. By booking a stall, you can easily sell these items from the comfort of your own home.

The UAE boasts numerous boutique stores that provide individuals with the opportunity to sell their designer items and earn a commission on each sale.

          4. Be a freelancer

If you possess a specialized skill that you can utilize during your free time, why not consider becoming a freelancer? In the UAE, obtaining a freelance permit can be done for as little as Dh530 per year. According to popular freelancing websites in the UAE, some of the most sought-after skills include content writing, data entry, logo design, graphic design, translation, and video editing.

To embark on your freelance journey, all you need to do is apply for a freelance license through the economic department in your emirate or choose a suitable free zone that aligns with your skills. Once you have obtained your license, you can begin searching for jobs and setting your own hours that accommodate your schedule. You can also set your own rates and charge what you believe is fair. Additionally, you can build relationships with potential clients and secure regular work.

          5. Get a part-time job

You also have the option to work part-time, provided that you possess a valid part-time work permit and your secondary employment does not exceed 20 hours per week.

In the United Arab Emirates, individuals can conveniently apply for this permit through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), without the need for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer.

Therefore, if you find yourself with some free time each day, you can explore various part-time job opportunities on online job portals and supplement your income. You can also take on larger projects and gain more experience. As your business grows, you can offer more services and take on more clients.  This will increase your income and give you the opportunity to hire more employees. You can also expand your customer base and increase your profits.

          6. Work while you are still at school

School students can also work in the UAE if they possess a valid work permit. Individuals aged 15 years or older are eligible to apply for a juvenile work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). This opportunity allows them to gain valuable work experience and earn a steady income at an early stage of their lives.

By obtaining a work permit, young students can embark on a journey toward professional growth while simultaneously earning a financial reward. This experience not only equips them with practical skills but also instills a sense of responsibility and independence.

The process of acquiring a juvenile work permit involves submitting an application to the MOHRE, which will then assess the eligibility of the applicant. Once approved, students can explore various employment opportunities across the UAE, contributing to their personal development and preparing them for future career endeavors.

Working at a young age not only provides financial benefits but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. It allows students to understand the value of hard work, time management, and teamwork, which are essential skills in any professional setting.

Moreover, the UAE’s diverse and dynamic work environment offers a multitude of industries and sectors for students to explore. Whether it be part-time positions in retail, hospitality, or administrative roles, the opportunities are vast and cater to a wide range of interests and aspirations.

In conclusion, the UAE recognizes the potential of its young population and encourages school students to engage in the workforce through the provision of juvenile work permits. This initiative not only allows them to earn money but also equips them with invaluable skills and experiences that will shape their future endeavors. So, seize this opportunity, apply for a work permit, and embark on a rewarding journey toward personal and professional growth.

          7. Work as a tour guide

If you frequently find yourself guiding visitors around Dubai when they come to explore the UAE, why not consider turning it into a lucrative opportunity? If you derive pleasure from assisting individuals in discovering the wonders of our city, you can apply for a tour guide license in Dubai through the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). This license not only grants you official recognition but also provides comprehensive training to transform you into a skilled and professional tour guide.

          Invest in a savings scheme

If you are unable to find the time for a side gig, consider saving at least Dh1,000 every month. A new savings program in the UAE offers the opportunity to earn a second salary by consistently saving a minimum of Dh1,000 per month for a period of three to 10 years. You have the flexibility to choose the duration of your savings, but it must be at least three years. Once the savings period concludes, you will begin receiving a monthly payment equivalent to your initial investment amount, plus the accumulated profit.

To illustrate, if you save Dh5,000 per month for 10 years, you can expect to receive Dh7,500 per month for the following 10 years. Similarly, if you save Dh5,000 per month for five years but decide to redeem your savings within the next three years, you could receive a monthly amount of Dh10,020 for three years.

This savings program offers a unique opportunity to supplement your income without the need for additional work. By consistently saving a set amount each month, you can enjoy the benefits of a second salary once the savings period ends. Whether you choose to save for a shorter or longer duration, this program provides a reliable and rewarding way to secure your financial future.
