When approaching a junction, there are several important factors to consider. How much should you reduce your speed? Are the vehicles behind you aware of your decreasing speed? And, are there any pedestrians who may attempt to cross the intersection even when the signal is green?
In the July edition of the Ministry of Interior’s 999 magazine, a list of guidelines has been provided for motorists to follow when approaching an intersection with a traffic light. These dos and don’ts are crucial for ensuring the safety of all road users and maintaining order at intersections.
Dos
- Anticipate Signal Changes: Stay alert for potential changes in traffic signals as you approach intersections.
- Safely Stop at Amber Lights: Ensure a safe stop before the light turns red by slowing down when you see an amber or yellow signal.
- Be Prepared for Sudden Braking: Stay vigilant of vehicles ahead that may brake suddenly to avoid running a red light.
- Monitor Traffic and Signals: Keep a close watch on both traffic conditions and signals, especially in heavy traffic situations.
Don’ts
- It is important to refrain from speeding up when approaching amber signals to avoid running a red light.
- Stay focused and avoid distractions while driving, especially at signalized intersections which require your full attention.
- Pedestrians should exercise caution and refrain from crossing the street during red signals at pedestrian crossings.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai offers a handbook with valuable tips to help ensure safe driving practices.
– Familiarize yourself with the sequence of traffic lights, especially noting that a flashing yellow light indicates a malfunction and requires extra caution.
– Anticipate traffic lights well in advance to prepare for any necessary adjustments.
– Before reaching a traffic light, check your mirrors and adjust your speed accordingly.
– Maintain proper lane alignment even after passing through an intersection.
– Adjust your speed to match the current road conditions.
– Avoid risky behaviors at red light intersections, such as:
- Attempting to rush through a yellow light before it turns red.
2. Abruptly stopping at a red light, which can increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
3. Stay alert for other drivers who may run a red light from either side of the intersection.
By following these guidelines, you can navigate traffic lights safely and reduce the risk of accidents at intersections.
Jumping a red light
According to the UAE Traffic Law, motorists who run a red light will face a fine of Dh1,000, 12 black points, and have their vehicle impounded for 30 days.
In addition to the Federal Traffic Law, each emirate has its own set of traffic regulations that may result in stricter penalties for motorists.
For instance, in Dubai, to retrieve an impounded vehicle, a payment of Dh50,000 is required as per Decree No. 30 of 2023.
Similarly, in Abu Dhabi, a payment of Dh50,000 is necessary to release an impounded vehicle, and the driver’s license will be suspended for six months under Law No. 5 of 2020.
Furthermore, if the impounded vehicle is not claimed within three months, it will be put up for auction.
