Dubai: Under 21 years old? How to renew your driving license

Dubai: Under 21 years old? How to renew your driving license

In Dubai, drivers under the age of 21 must renew their licenses annually rather than the customary every two years to start and then every five years after that. However, there is good news if you are a young driver whose license is due to expire. Although you must renew your driver’s license each year, the fee is less than half of what it would otherwise be.

What is the procedure for renewing a driver’s license and how does it differ for those under the age of 21? Here is everything you require to know.

Driving license renewal requirements

The procedure to renew your driver’s license is a little different if you are a young driver between the ages of 18 and 21. Newly licensed drivers typically need to renew their licences every two years. The license is then valid for five years after the initial renewal.

However, underage drivers of all nationalities must renew their driver’s licences annually. In Dubai, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) oversees both the issuance of driving licences and their renewal procedures.

In Dubai, how much does it cost to renew a driver’s license?

For drivers under the age of 21, the renewal charge is Dh100 plus a Dh20 knowledge fee. This adds up to Dh120 overall.

The cost of renewing your license if you are older than 21 is Dh320.

Eye test requirement for drivers under the age of 21

Drivers under the age of 21 are exempt from the requirement to have an eye examination, according to the RTA call center at 800 9090. However, once the driver reaches the age of 21, they must take a three-year eye test.
