In terms of tourism, Dubai had a remarkable year in 2023—a staggering 17.15 million foreign visitors visited the city.

The Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, disclosed the most recent data on X.

“These achievements align with the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, aiming to position Dubai as one of the top three cities worldwide for business and tourism,” Sheikh Hamdan said.

Dubai hotel occupancy rate hits 77.4 percent

Dubai’s impressive growth—a notable 19.4% increase—solidified the emirate’s standing as a premier international travel destination.

Leading the way is the city’s tourism industry, which has one of the highest hotel occupancy rates in the world, at 77.4%.

Sheikh Hamdan disclosed that Dubai’s hotel capacity has increased to more than 150,000 rooms in order to meet the increasing demand, further boosting the city’s appeal to tourists from around the world.

At a new high of 41.7 million, the number of occupied hotel room nights increased significantly, up 11% from the previous year and 30% from 2019 data.

“The significant rebound of Dubai’s tourism sector, outstripping global recovery rates, stands as a testament to the vision and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This surge not only commemorates the inaugural year of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 but also highlights the efficacy of a strategy that is a decade in the making, exemplifying resilience and adaptability as central to our economic impetus,” Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET said.

Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce, agreed that the city’s reputation as a top travel destination has been solidified by the range of unparalleled experiences.

“As Dubai continues its exponential growth in alignment with the D33 Agenda set forth by our forward-thinking leadership, we remain committed to further elevating our standards and to advancing with innovative and distinctive world-class infrastructure, experiences, and attractions,” Kazim said.

The increase in tourism has wider economic effects; in the first nine months of 2023, lodging and food services saw an astounding 11.1 percent growth, matching Dubai’s overall 3.3 percent GDP expansion.

The Dubai Festival and Retail Establishment’s calendar of legendary events, which includes retail promotions, art, culinary, and international trade shows, sustain the flourishing scene. In 2023, major events like Gitex and Gulfood alone attracted over 200,000 visitors.

The range of cruise and yacht tourism offerings in Dubai has grown. 15 marinas with a combined total of 3,600 berths strengthened the allure of superyachts and other vessels worldwide.

Another exciting era begins with the arrival of the luxury liner Mein Schiff 2, which marks the start of the 2023–2024 winter season.

According to the UNWTO, Dubai outperformed recovery trends worldwide, with the Middle East outperforming all other regions.

Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan to double tourism over the next two decades

Dubai is in a good position to grow going forward. Over the next 20 years, the 2040 Urban Master Plan calls for doubling the amount of space dedicated to entertainment and accommodation. Cementing the city’s value as an inclusive global gateway are initiatives under the Economic Agenda and an expanded cruise schedule.
