Shifting homes in Dubai? What you need to know about transferring electricity and water

If you are shifting houses in Dubai, you can use the ‘Move-to’ service of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) to have your connection moved automatically from your old house to your new one.

By inputting the Ejari contract information for the new home, users of the online service can also transfer the security deposit that was paid for the previous property to the new one.

The “Move-to” service, which Dewa customers can use to cut the utility connection at the old premises and activate electricity and water services at the new premises without having to go to a Dewa office, was introduced in 2017.

Here is how you can use the service.

How to apply for the DEWA ‘Move-to’ service

  1. Go to the Dewa website at www.dewa.gov.ae and select the menu tab on the left side of the screen, which is denoted by three lines. Next, pick “Consumer” and then “Transfer of Electricity/Water (Move-to) Service” under “Supply management.”
  2. Next, select “Apply online” in the green box. The next step is to log in, which you may do using your Dewa account information or your UAE Pass if you have a separate Dewa account.
  3. The system will provide information about the property that is currently registered under your account once you log in to the service. Then, you will be prompted to enter the following information:
  1. Next, click ‘continue’.
  2. After that, a form with the pre-filled “business partner” number will be shown to you. This number can be found on your Dewa bill if you need to manually enter it.

Next, choose “tenant” under “Customer Type” from the dropdown menu.

The Ejari number and the Premise number of the new property will then be required. Both of these specifics can be found in your new tenancy agreement.

  1. Next, click the “calculate” button, and the system will determine whether you have any unpaid balances. If you do, use the “Bill Payment” option to pay them online, then return to the Dewa “Move-to” application.
  2. After that, press the “Submit” button to pay the service fees online using a credit or debit card.

You will receive a confirmation from Dewa through email and SMS once the fees have been paid, allowing you to keep tabs on the progress of your application.

When the security deposit is transferred to the new account once the application is granted, the power and water supply for the new property will be turned on. On the day you’ve chosen to leave your current location, the supply will be turned off. In a few days, you will also receive the last utility bill for your previous residence. The amount owed will be moved to your new account number if you don’t pay the final payment.

Fees

As per Dewa’s website, this is the cost for using the move-to service:

Does one need to pay a Dewa security deposit for my new home?

While you might not be required to pay an additional security deposit, if you are moving from a flat to a villa, you might be required to do so because the security deposit amounts for flats and villas vary.

Security deposit required for apartments – Dh2,000

Security deposit required for villas – Dh4,000

The connection will be activated at your new house on the date you’ve specified as soon as all necessary payments have been made.
