Like to shop internationally? Dubai Customs will now charge new duty charges

If you enjoy shopping abroad, you should be aware of the new customs laws that will be in place starting on January 1, 2023, before having your purchases delivered to you from outside the United Arab Emirates.

Items with a value over Dh300 are now subject to customs clearance and customs charges as a result of Dubai Customs’ Notice No. 5 of 2022. Customs duties are not applied to any items imported for personal use that are under Dh300 in value.

If the item’s value is greater than Dh300, the following is a breakdown of all the fees you will need to consider:

– 5% import customs duty charge

– 5% Value Added Tax (VAT)

Tobacco, tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and nicotine liquids are not included in this breakdown.

Tobacco, tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and nicotine liquids of any value will be subject to a 200 percent customs and excise tax, also known as a “sin tax,” beginning on January 1, 2023.

Since December 2019, an excise tax has been charged on certain products that are typically bad for the environment or human health. This includes a 50% tax on carbonated beverages, a 100% tariff on tobacco goods, energy drinks, electronic smoking tools, and liquids used in those instruments, as well as a 50% tax on any product that contains added sugar or other sweeteners.
