Do you need to apply for your health insurance if you just received the UAE Golden Visa? A recent announcement from the Abu Dhabi Department of Health and the Abu Dhabi Residents Office states that there are different rules depending on whether you are employed by a company or self-employed.

“Employed staff transferring to a Golden Visa will continue to be covered by their employer’s health insurance policy. Freelancers and individuals residing abroad must have health insurance valid in the UAE while in the country, or cover full medical costs if needed,” the announcement by Abu Dhabi Media Office read.

What is the process for applying for health insurance?

Health insurance can be obtained through the websites of any of the many insurance companies and brokers in the UAE. According to the UAE Insurance Authority’s 2017 annual report, the UAE has 62 insurance companies and 160 brokers, so it offers a lot of options.

However, if you approach a broker, they might offer you options from several companies.

Documents required

First, you will need to provide basic information such as your name, gender, and age. In order to apply for a family member or a dependent, you must identify your relationship, and based on the type of play you choose, you may also need to fill out a health declaration form. It is mandatory in the comprehensive plan since the premium depends on your age and previous conditions.
