For tourists with special needs, Dubai offers free parking and reduced taxi fares

Tourists with special needs or people of determination (PoD) are eligible for free public parking throughout Dubai for a period of up to three months. Additionally, they have the opportunity to obtain special permits that grant them a 50% discount on taxi fares.

During the 4th Accessible Travel and Tourism International Conference, representatives from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) addressed this initiative.

Osama Al Safi, the RTA director of the Parking Department and head of the Friendly Organization for PoD, emphasized that PoD tourists can enjoy complimentary access to public parking in Dubai, similar to the privileges granted to senior Emiratis and PoD residents.

Digital parking permit

To apply for free parking, you have two convenient options: online through RTA’s website or app, or in person at any RTA customer happiness center. Since August of last year, the RTA has modernized its free parking permit services, eliminating the need for PoDs to print and display physical permits.

It’s important to note that the free parking privilege for PoD tourists is temporary and limited to a maximum of three months per application.

Discounts on taxi fare

PoD tourists simply need to apply for a Sanad card, which is a smart card issued by the Community Development Authority (CDA) specifically for residents and tourists of PoD.

DTC recently announced an expansion of its taxi fare discount program, providing wider coverage for passengers. Previously, only dedicated taxis or those specifically designed for wheelchair users offered discounted fares. However, with the introduction of this new initiative, Persons with Disabilities (PoDs), including those with non-motor disabilities, can now book regular taxis through the DTC App and benefit from reduced fares.

Established in 1995, DTC stands as the largest taxi operator in Dubai, boasting a fleet of approximately 7,000 taxis and currently commanding a significant 44 percent market share.

How to get a Sanad card?

To avail themselves of a 50% fare discount, PoD tourists are required to obtain a Sanad card.

According to the official website of the Community Development Authority (CDA), the duration of validity for Sanad cards issued to PoD tourists is determined by the length of their visit.

The application process for obtaining a Sanad card can be conveniently completed online. The requirements include submitting an electronic copy of the visit visa issued by Dubai, a copy of the passport, an electronic copy of a medical report or disability card from the tourist’s home country, and a recent photograph.
