Are you being tailgated in the fast lane, even though you are driving within the speed limit? An awareness campaign initiated by Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) highlights that both you and the driver behind you may fail to adhere to the rules of the fast lane.
Dubai Police emphasizes the importance of following basic rules when using the fast lane:
- Failure to Yield is Against the Law
It is important to keep the fast lane clear unless you are passing another vehicle, as not yielding in the fast lane is illegal. The fast lane should only be utilized for passing other vehicles.
- Transition to the Second Lane
After passing in the fast lane, move over to the lane on the right.
- Yield, Even if You’re Driving the Speed Limit
If a faster vehicle approaches you from behind, be sure to yield even if you are driving at the speed limit. Failing to give way to vehicles approaching from behind can result in a fine of Dh400 and four black points on your license.
- Avoid Tailgating
If the driver ahead of you does not yield, refrain from tailgating and maintain a safe distance from their vehicle. Motorists who fail to keep a safe distance between their vehicle and the one in front may face a Dh400 traffic fine.
- Give Priority to Emergency Vehicles
Keep in mind that the fast lane is designated for overtaking purposes only, and emergency vehicles always have the right of way.
