Dubai's special number plate auctions: how you can participate

Looking for a one-of-a-kind license plate for your Dubai-registered vehicle? One might be bought for as little as Dh1,000.

The Roads and Transportation Authority (RTA) holds frequent auctions for unique number plates, both online and in auction halls. There are various possibilities for car owners who want a unique number plate, ranging in price from a few thousand dirhams to millions of dirhams.

What is the online number plate auction?

Hundreds of number plates are made available at RTA’s regular number plate auctions, which are held both online and in auction halls.

Online auctions sell three-, four-, or five-digit license plates. The more limited ‘super number plates,’ such as ‘AA90’ or ‘M73,’ which were auctioned off in March of this year, are sold in live auctions in auction rooms.

While super number plates might command tens of millions of dollars in bids, online auctions with four- or five-digit number plates can be more accessible to vehicle enthusiasts, with some plates starting at Dh1,000.

How does one know when an online auction is taking place?

RTA’s website – https://www.rta.ae/wps/portal/rta/ae/home/auction/ – lists forthcoming online auctions.

The following information can be found on the page:

How can one register for an online auction?

To begin, keep in mind that in order to participate in an online auction, you must either have a vehicle registered in Dubai or a Dubai-issued driver’s license.

If you meet the conditions, you can register for an upcoming auction by following these steps:

  1. Register with RTA – All online auction participants should register with RTA at www.rta.ae. You’ll need to submit your email address and mobile number to create an account and then link your traffic file.
  2. After logging in with your RTA account, you’ll be sent to your personal dashboard, where you’ll see a list of RTA services for which you can submit an online application.
  3. Select ‘plates,’ then ‘Subscribe to Auction.’
  4. Select the option for enrolling as an individual under-identification verification.
  5. Next, type in your Emirates ID number and the date it expires.
  6. Enter your account’s registered mobile number. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to you to confirm your identity.

The system will then present you with information about the upcoming online auction after you enter the OTP.

  1. Select’register’ from the drop-down menu. You will be taken to a payment site where you can make a credit card payment. Both the security deposit (Dh5,000) and the participation fee must be paid (Dh120).
  2. After properly registering, you can begin bidding on the numbers of your choice.

How the bidding process takes place

Online auctions might last for several days. As a result, it’s critical to maintain track of the highest bidder on the number plate you want to win.

You’ll be able to check if a number plate you’ve bid on has received a better bid when you click on it in the plate information.

If you want to raise your offer, keep in mind the minimum increment that has been set for that particular number plate. So, if your plate’s minimum increment is set to Dh100 and the current bid is for Dh2,000, you’ll need to offer at least Dh2,100.

If you place the winning bid for your desired number plate, you must pay the total amount due within 10 days after the auction’s conclusion. You can pay your bill online or at any of the RTA’s customer service centers.

The plate will be shipped to you or you can pick it up from an RTA customer delight center once the auction ends.

According to the RTA website, if you do not collect the number plates at the end of the auction, the security fees will be reduced by Dh500.
